Claiming Your Utah Heat Pump Rebates Step by Step
Most homeowners receive their cash from Rocky Mountain Power Wattsmart Homes or Enbridge Gas ThermWise once installation is complete. Follow the utility rules below in order, or you may lose your eligibility:
- Choose a program-participating contractor before work starts, because Rocky Mountain Power rejects heat pump claims by installers outside the program.
- Talk with your installer about the equipment rules, and make sure at least 80 percent of your home will be heated by the new system.
- Within 180 days of completion, send your paperwork via the Wattsmart online portal. Expect your check within 14 working days.
- The 2026 Enbridge Gas form must be mailed or submitted within six months of installation when your gas and electric setup qualifies.
Tax Credits and Heating Fuel Rules in Utah
Per the Energy Information Administration, natural gas heats almost eight in ten Utah homes, and electricity heats one in six. The rebate you get depends on the fuel your home currently heats with. The $1,600 to $1,700 from Rocky Mountain Power applies only when you replace electric resistance heat, in other words electric baseboards or an electric furnace. Systems running on gas, propane, oil, wood, or pellets do not qualify. Gas households often go with a dual-fuel system instead, pairing a gas furnace with an electric heat pump. With that setup, Rocky Mountain Power pays up to $1,450, and Enbridge Gas adds up to $1,200. A rule change in February 2026 also pays $1,000 when a single-head ductless unit is added to gas radiant floor heat. After December 31, 2025, the federal 25C tax credit is no longer offered. Geothermal systems put into service before January 1, 2028 can still earn Utah's Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit.
Free Weatherization and Income-Qualified Help in Utah
The Utah Home Energy Rebate program is on hold right now, so statewide rebates for lower-income households are unavailable until further notice. In December 2024, the Utah Office of Energy Development applied to the federal government for whole-home and appliance efficiency rebates. That application has not yet been approved by federal officials. Right now, neither program has any money available. During the pause in those funds, the Utah Weatherization Assistance Program serves households that earn up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Eight local government and nonprofit agencies deliver this free service, run by the Utah Division of Housing and Community Development. Older adults, people with disabilities, and households with preschool-age children go first, as do high energy users and heating emergencies. Households that take part cut their energy bills by nearly 35 percent, saving about $583 each year.
Common Questions About Utah Heat Pump Rebates
In Utah, what other heat pump rebates exist for smaller upgrades or manufactured homes?
Rocky Mountain Power also pays $450 to upgrade a heat pump you already own, plus $600 for a supplemental ductless unit, beyond whole-home systems. Heat pump water heaters get $350, and window heat pumps earn up to $125. Only the water heater rebate covers manufactured homes, and you may install it yourself when replacing an electric tank. Ductless heat pump rebates never apply to unheated garages.
Does the federal heat pump tax credit still exist in 2026?
No. Under Public Law 119-21, Congress ended the federal tax credit early on July 4, 2025. Per IRS Fact Sheet FS-2025-05, issued August 21, 2025, a system put into service after December 31, 2025 does not qualify. Equipment qualifies only if it is completely installed on or before that date.
How do efficiency ratings affect my Utah heat pump rebate amount?
Rocky Mountain Power gives bigger rebates when your HSPF2 heating rating and SEER2 cooling rating are higher. For ducted electric conversions, the amounts are $1,200 at Tier 1, $1,400 at Tier 2, and $1,600 for Tier 3 cold-climate systems. With Enbridge Gas, the dual-fuel rebate drops from $1,200 to $850 at Tier 2 if you keep your existing gas furnace.
Do any state tax rebates for heat pumps still exist in Utah?
Utah does not offer a state tax rebate for standard air-source heat pumps, and the state Home Energy Rebate program is still paused. However, a residential geothermal heat pump still qualifies homeowners for Utah's Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit. To qualify under House Bill 264 from 2025, a geothermal system must be put into service before January 1, 2028.
