Ontario Heat Pump Rebate Amounts in the Home Renovation Savings Program
Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy run the Home Renovation Savings Program Ontario offers, with support from the Ontario Government. With an air-source heat pump, heat travels between your home and the outdoor air. What fuel heats your home now determines the rebate amount. Heating size is measured in tons, and each ton covers a bigger share of your house. Gas customers now get the Enbridge heat pump rebate through this joint program, after the older offers closed.
- For a cold climate air-source model, homes heated by electricity, oil, propane, or wood earn $1,250 per ton, capped at $7,500.
- Non-gas homes that install a ground-source heat pump, drawing warmth from pipes buried below ground, receive $2,000 per ton, to a maximum of $12,000.
- Enbridge natural gas homes get $3,000 for ground-source systems, or $500 for each ton on an air-source unit, up to $2,000.
Ontario Window Rebates and Bundled Home Upgrades
Start with an audit and the Ontario Home Renovation Savings assessment bundle covers windows, doors, insulation, and water heaters. Payment requires you to finish two or more upgrades that qualify. The bundle also includes a $600 assessment rebate when finished, and a $500 bonus once you do three upgrades. For window payments, the count is by rough opening, the hole framed inside your wall.
- You earn $100 per rough opening by replacing at least three windows or one door with ENERGY STAR models.
- Insulate your attic, walls, foundation, or exposed floor as part of the bundle and receive up to $7,700 in rebates.
- In a bundle, qualified ENERGY STAR heat pump water heaters give you $500 back.
- Attic insulation pays up to $1,250 and smart thermostats $125 under single upgrades with no assessment.
- Without an assessment, solar panels bring up to $5,000, and battery storage adds up to $5,000 more.
Heat Pumps for Free in the Energy Affordability Program
Lower-income households that use oil or electric heat can receive a cold climate air-source unit at no cost through Save on Energy. Ontario co-delivers federal funding so oil-heated homes receive a free direct installation worth up to $25,000. Renters, homeowners, and leaseholders named on the electricity bill may apply online.
A household income under the program income limits, before tax, qualifies you, as do government or energy assistance programs. The before-tax limits run from $48,220 for a single person to $96,439 for a household of four. An energy expert will visit your home and do a free assessment once you have applied. Instead, income-qualified natural gas customers may use the Enbridge Home Winterproofing Program, which covers draft proofing, insulation, and smart thermostats for free.
Applying to the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program HRSP
Heat pump rebates on their own require no energy audit, but you must have pre-approval before any work begins.
- On the heat pump rebate portal, the short eligibility form must be completed before you buy equipment.
- Pick a heating contractor who takes part in the program, have them choose a qualified model, and let them submit your pre-installation application.
- Do not let your contractor install the system until you have pre-approval, since systems installed before that get no rebate.
- Ask your contractor to submit the post-installation paperwork, and your cheque will arrive in the mail within 60 days.
If you choose assessment bundle upgrades, your payment comes by mail within 60 days, or by Interac e-Transfer within 30 days.
Closed Grants and the Federal National Heat Pump Rebate
For its new National Heat Pump Rebate, the federal government announced $2 billion spread across eight years, on October 8, 2026. In early 2027, the federal portal opens for air-source units built for cold climates, and no energy audit is required. Up to $10,000 is available to households below median income, and $2,000 goes to other eligible homeowners. The full rules are released November 1, 2026. Installations that are eligible and start on November 1, 2026 or later can apply in early 2027. Pre-approval takes 24 hours once the portal is live, and approving your payment takes five days from when receipts are uploaded.
Older federal programs are gone: the Greener Homes Loan is closed, and the Canada Greener Homes Grant shut down December 31, 2025. For Ontario, Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate stopped accepting applications on January 27, 2025, while Home Efficiency Rebate Plus evaluations finished on December 1, 2025.
Ontario Heat Pump Rebates: Common Questions
Who qualifies for heat pump rebates and energy rebates in Ontario?
Homeowners, plus landlords with tenants, qualify when the building is detached, semi-detached, a row or townhome unit, or a permanent mobile home. Brand new homes are not eligible for Home Renovation Savings upgrades. Being on the Ontario grid or using Enbridge gas is required, so Cornwall Electric customers must have Enbridge gas heating.
Are Ontario heat pump rebates ending?
Within Ontario's 2025 to 2036 framework, rebates are continuing, and the incentives generally cover no more than 30 per cent of what an upgrade costs. The only closures hit older federal programs, including direct Oil to Heat Pump Affordability intake, which ended July 31, 2026. Federal oil applicants who were approved must upload their final receipts plus contractor attestation forms by January 31, 2027.
Which rebates for windows and insulation can I claim in Ontario for 2026?
The minimum needed for the $100 window rebate is also met by replacing a single skylight or a single sliding door rough opening. A home energy assessment plus one more qualifying upgrade is still required. Cathedral ceiling or flat roof insulation earns up to $750 in single-upgrade rebates when there is no assessment.
Which federal grants can help retrofit a home?
The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, which began in 2025, pays for retrofits at no cost for tenants and homeowners through provincial partners. Over 100,000 eligible cold climate models qualify for the upcoming National Heat Pump Rebate, with one grant per person. On average, households that switch from oil, propane, or electric resistance save more than $1,400 each year.
How do I apply with a contractor for the 2026 Ontario heat pump rebate?
For ground-source rebates, contractors use closed loop capacity, and for air-source rebates they use the minimum heating capacity measured at 8.3 degrees Celsius. Any water-to-water geothermal unit needs to be on the ENERGY STAR list. If you already have an approved Canada Greener Homes Loan of $5,000 to $40,000, your interest-free funding stays in place.
Get installer quotes that include your rebates
Most rebates on this page are paid through the installer or need the installer's paperwork, so the quote is where the money is settled. Tell us the ZIP code and what you want installed, and installers who work with these programs send a written price with the rebates taken off.
