Claiming New York Heat Pump Rebates Through Your Utility
Standard incentives are paid directly through approved installers by six major electric companies, while PSEG Long Island runs its own separate program. Each system has to handle at least 100% of the heating load for your entire home, with no other heat source. Utilities pay the most when you decommission, meaning your old furnace, boiler, or oil tank is fully removed from service. So you do not lose your payment, take the four steps below in order, with your utility:
- Before you sign a contract, hire a participating contractor, since work done by unapproved installers does not qualify.
- Check your quote lists the rebate before work begins, since Con Edison turns down invoices sold without the discount shown.
- Have the contractor file the application so you get an upfront discount, or allow five to seven weeks for a check from Central Hudson.
- Before you buy, claim the $1,500 water heater rebate from Con Edison at checkout, available between September 1 and November 30, 2026.
Can households with lower income receive higher rebates?
Households with income below the county limits get most or all upgrade costs covered by state and federal funds. Eligibility is based on Area Median Income, the midpoint income for families where you live, or on enrollment in utility assistance. On May 30, 2024, New York opened the federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates, which run alongside Home Efficiency Rebates. No-cost work is available to families earning under 80% of the median income, capped at $12,000 upstate and $14,000 downstate, plus $10,000 more for a heat pump add-on. Homes with moderate incomes receive 50% off, with limits of $6,000 upstate and $7,000 downstate. Coupons arrive by email from the retail Appliance Upgrade Program: up to $4,000 for electric panels, $2,500 for wiring, and $840 for dryers. Use the MyEnergy Portal to apply for retail coupons or an assigned contractor, since only one program can be joined at a time. After your income is verified, PSEG Long Island lets residents of Long Island below 60% of median income claim $7,500.
State Tax Credits, Fuel Rules, and Free Weatherization
State programs put insulation and air sealing ahead of heating upgrades, since a tight home calls for smaller, cheaper equipment. No-cost sealing is open to households earning at or below 60% of the state median income, via the Weatherization Assistance Program. From September 1, 2026, Clean Heat will pay more under the Weatherized Tier: $10,000 at Con Edison and $12,000 at Central Hudson. Your project cap rises from 70% to 85% if your home is in a Disadvantaged Community, meaning a neighborhood the state flags for extra energy funding. Every air-source unit has to meet cold-climate standards, and utility rebates are not available to natural gas-only accounts or homes with existing full-load heat pumps. Installs after 31 December 2025 no longer qualify for the federal 25C tax credit. There is still help for ground-source systems, though. The New York Geothermal Energy System Credit covers 25% of equipment costs, up to $10,000.
Common Questions About New York Heat Pump Rebates
Is a heat pump tax credit available in New York?
A state tax credit is open only to ground-source systems, which you claim by filing Form IT-267. You can take 25% of qualified equipment costs, capped at $10,000, for any install dated July 1, 2025 or later; the limit was $5,000 before. No tax credit exists for air-source heat pumps, but rebates can be paired with a state Smart Energy Loan or On-Bill Recovery Loan.
How large is the New York heat pump rebate in 2026?
Your single-family utility payout drops if you keep the old furnace or boiler while adding a new full-load heat pump. The payouts are $2,500 at Con Edison, $4,000 at Central Hudson, $5,000 from Orange and Rockland, and $6,000 from National Grid. If you expand an older partial system to heat the whole house, you get $3,000 to $4,000; a geothermal retrofit brings $14,000 to $40,000.
After rebates, what does a heat pump cost to install in a single-family house?
The top residential rebate tiers go to single-family homes above 1,000 square feet, though contractor prices differ. Up to 70% of total project costs can be covered by utility incentives, or 85% at Central Hudson and in Disadvantaged Communities. After installation, customers of Con Edison cut their electric bills by an average of 10% with the Steady Use Rate.
