SCE Heat Pump Rebate

If your home is in an eligible part of Southern California Edison's area, the SCE heat pump rebate from the Home Performance Plus program will pay as much as $1,144.80 for every ton of new heat pump capacity you install, and it adds up to $1,350 more if you put in a heat pump water heater. It is open right now. A ton measures how big a heating and cooling system is, and the rebate covers as much as five tons. To qualify, your home has to sit inside a Disadvantaged or Low-Income community.

How much can you get for each type of equipment?

What you get depends on the equipment you choose and on the gas or electric unit it takes out. These are the standard amounts from Home Performance Plus, which the SCE rebates page lists.

Who Can Get the Rebate?

You have to be a residential electric customer of SCE. Renters can join along with owners, provided the home is either a detached single-family house or one of up to four units in a building.

Where the home sits matters too. It needs to be inside a Disadvantaged or Low-Income community, and that location rule holds for every standard upgrade in the program, per the rebate rules SCE uses.

Old and new equipment requirements

Any new heat pump needs a rating of 16 SEER2 or better. That number comes from the manufacturer's yellow label and shows cooling efficiency; the bigger it is, the more efficient the machine.

Your existing equipment has to be old or inefficient enough to count as well:

  • A ducted central heat pump must take out a central air conditioner with a rating of 12.4 SEER2 or less, along with a gas furnace at 80% AFUE or less. AFUE tells you, from a label on the gas furnace, how much of the fuel becomes heat.
  • A mini-split must take out a gas wall furnace that has no blower fan and sits at 67% AFUE or less.

How to Get the Rebate, Step by Step

It helps to follow these steps in order, because the rebate only comes through once you've had the free assessment and used an installer the program has approved.

  1. Schedule a free appointment with an Energy Advisor from Home Performance Plus.
  2. An Energy Specialist then comes to your home and does a free home energy assessment.
  3. Go over your custom report, which shows the upgrades suggested for your home and the rebates you could claim.
  4. Have a Home Performance Plus Trade Ally do the installation. A Trade Ally is a contractor the program has approved.

You pay nothing for the assessment. When you book a free assessment through Home Performance Plus, an Energy Advisor coordinates your home visit and custom report. That advisor also connects you with approved Trade Ally contractors who handle the installation and rebate paperwork.

Free Heat Pumps for Income-Qualified Households

Through SCE's Energy Savings Assistance program, a water heater can be swapped for a heat pump water heater, or a central AC or heat pump can be replaced, at no cost to you. Income-qualified homeowners and renters are eligible, as the Energy Savings Assistance page explains.

You can qualify in one of two ways. Your household income can be at or below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines, or you can be enrolled in a program such as CalFresh, LIHEAP, or Medi-Cal. Not every area offers the central air conditioner and heat pump replacements.

You apply through SCE. Once your income is confirmed, an authorized contractor visits your home and installs the new unit, and an inspection may follow.

Common Questions

Does the federal heat pump tax credit still exist in 2026?

No. The federal home energy credit no longer applies once equipment goes into use after December 31, 2025, because Public Law 119-21 was signed on July 4, 2025, per the IRS. Fact sheet FS-2025-05 from the IRS, dated August 21, 2025, spells out the change.

Does California have any heat pump rebates right now?

California's statewide Home Energy Rebates program is paused. All single-family rebates have been reserved since February 24, 2026, and all multifamily rebates since September 1, 2026, per TECH Clean California. The program is not accepting new reservations, and it says another phase is coming later.

Is time running out on heat pump rebates?

A few SCE offers are winding down. New enrollments into the SCE Building Electrification Program stopped in September 2026, and the whole-home pilot within Energy Savings Assistance ends at the end of 2026, according to SCE's program page.

Compare Local Installer Quotes With Your Rebate

Most rebates on this page are paid through the installer or need the installer's paperwork, so the quote is where the money is settled. Tell us the ZIP code and what you want installed, and installers who work with these programs send a written price with the rebates taken off.
