Eligibility Rules for Customers and Homes
Home Heating and Cooling Discounts are open to current ComEd residential customers in Illinois, including landlords holding a residential account. Your ducted air source system can work alongside the furnace and central air conditioner you have now, or replace them. Geothermal discounts cover single-family houses plus buildings of two to four flats; heat pump water heaters qualify in both existing homes and newly built ones. Whole Home Electric is for households earning no more than 80% of Area Median Income, which is the region's midpoint income. Across most of the Chicago metro area, a four-person household has an income limit of $95,900 per year. Single-family participants receive an air source heat pump and a water heater at no cost, but 2026 money for natural gas homes is gone.
How to Claim Your Instant Discount
A separate rebate application is not needed for standard air source upgrades. When the job is finished, your installer removes the discount straight from your bill.
- The ComEd heating and cooling page has a Find the Right Expert directory; use it to choose a participating contractor.
- Work with your installer to choose a qualifying model, so they can verify its efficiency ratings against the official testing directory.
- The contractor installs your equipment, then applies a discount of up to $2,000 to your checkout invoice.
- With geothermal, you can get up to $6,000, but your certified provider must obtain pre-approval first; the discount then arrives as an invoice credit or check.
Homeowners who qualify by income should complete the Whole Home Electric form instead, or call ComEd to finish screening and schedule an assessment.
Approved Contractors and Ratings for Equipment
You must buy from a ComEd heat pump-trained contractor to qualify for the air source or mini-split discount. Units you install yourself do not qualify, but ComEd program FAQs confirm that an approved contractor is not needed for heat pump water heaters. For geothermal installations, the provider must hold Illinois Commerce Commission certification plus dedicated geothermal credentials. One ton of heating equals 12,000 British thermal units per hour, and equipment tiers are based on tons. The AHRI directory is the independent testing list; installers verify ratings there, confirming the official HSPF2 heating and SEER2 cooling scores. For ducted units the minimums are 15.2 SEER2, 9.4 EER2 and 8.1 HSPF2; ductless models require 17 SEER2 and 9 HSPF2. Ductless units are listed at 10 HSPF2 on ComEd's FAQ page, and refrigerant for all heat pumps must be rated no higher than 700.
More ComEd Rebates and 2026 Deadlines
Several ComEd rebates can be combined when you upgrade home equipment.
- Have your contractor buy and install an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat along with your new heat pump, and $75 is added.
- You can claim up to $750 with a heat pump water heater that is ENERGY STAR v5.0 and delivers at least 45 gallons per hour.
- For a heat pump clothes dryer, apply through ComEd appliance rebates to get $200 back, or $400 if income eligible.
- Through Single Family Home Energy Savings, order free efficiency products and ask about the delivery rate for all-electric space heat, which is lower.
Contractor water heater discounts begin July 1, 2026, while space heating discounts are available from Jan. 1, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2026. A water heater bought in a store must be paid for by Dec. 31, 2026; submit the application within 60 days, or no later than Feb. 28, 2027.
ComEd Heat Pump Discounts: Common Questions
Can you still claim the federal heat pump tax credit for 2026 installations?
No. Heat pumps placed in service after Dec. 31, 2025 no longer qualify for the federal Section 25C tax credit. This credit was ended early by Congress under Public Law 119-21, which was signed on July 4, 2025. Fact Sheet FS-2025-05 has the IRS modification rules for equipment installed before that cutoff.
Are heat pump rebates offered by the state of Illinois open during 2026?
Federal tax credits have ended, and planning is still underway for the state program, Illinois Home Energy Rebates. Its application has not been processed yet by the United States Department of Energy, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency reports. The main incentives open to homeowners, until state funds launch, are still utility discounts and appliance rebates.
If you purchase a unit, how does the ComEd heat pump discount apply?
The installer reviews the heating capacity of your model and its efficiency tier, then takes the matching amount straight off your bill. For example, a smaller ducted unit under 2.5 tons qualifies for up to $900 at Tier 1, or $1,500 at Tier 2. The program pays $800 or $1,200 if only an indoor geothermal unit is replaced, rather than the full loop incentive.
In an Illinois home, what lowers the price of heat pump installation?
ComEd sets no fixed installation price, since your home's ductwork and heating tonnage drive the project quote. But under Whole Home Electric, single-family households inside the 80% income limit do not pay for equipment or installation. A free induction stove and clothes dryer can also come with that income-qualified package, though owners of multifamily buildings may pay a co-pay.
Compare Quotes From ComEd Heat Pump Contractors
Most rebates on this page are paid through the installer or need the installer's paperwork, so the quote is where the money is settled. Tell us the ZIP code and what you want installed, and installers who work with these programs send a written price with the rebates taken off.
