Federal Canada Heat Pump Rebates and the New Portal

Over eight years, a $2 billion federal investment will fund the upcoming National Heat Pump Rebate, with the announcement made on October 8, 2026. Environment and Climate Change Canada created the grant for air source heat pumps rated for cold climates; these electric units move heat into the house. Other eligible homeowners qualify for $2,000, and households below median income qualify for up to $10,000. One rebate per person is the limit.

Although the online portal does not open until early 2027, the retroactivity period starts on November 1, 2026, so earlier installations still count. The November 1, 2026 release will include the full rules plus the Eligible Products List, which covers over 100,000 models. A home energy audit will not be required before or after you install your unit. After the portal goes live, you receive pre-approval in 24 hours. Submitting receipts gets your payment approved within five days.

Canada Greener Homes Grant 2026 and Loan Status

The Canada Greener Homes Grant was closed by Natural Resources Canada, with December 31, 2025 as the final day to submit documents. Ontario applicants had to complete the post-retrofit evaluation under Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus by December 1, 2025.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan has now committed all of its funding, meaning no new applications can be approved. Until it closed, the Greener Homes Loan gave interest-free amounts from $5,000 to $40,000, spread over 10 years, and up to 15% upfront covered contractor deposits. If you already have an approved loan, you are not affected, and your committed funding stays available. Borrowers with approval must finish their upgrades, schedule a post-retrofit evaluation, and ask for the final advance in the loan portal.

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program OHPA and Provincial Delivery

The Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program stopped accepting federal applications on July 31, 2026 in Alberta, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Up to $10,000 upfront went to eligible households buying 500 litres of heating oil or more over 12 months, funded by the federal grant. Federal applicants who are approved have until January 31, 2027 to complete installation and upload their final receipts and the mandatory attestation form. Where provinces co-deliver Oil to Heat Pump Affordability, they offered up to $15,000 plus a $250 payment, and each province taking part set its own deadline.

Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program for No-Cost Retrofits

The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program started delivering no-cost retrofits in 2025 for homeowners and tenants with low to median incomes. Ottawa does not accept applications directly from households, so eligible residents must go through the utility or energy agency in their province.

Rebates in British Columbia, Ontario, and Nova Scotia

Provincial utilities and agencies run active programs in British Columbia, Ontario, as well as Nova Scotia, for both standard households and those that are income-qualified.

  • In British Columbia, the Home Renovation Rebate Program covers electric heat at up to $4,000, and northern gas homes can get up to $8,000.
  • British Columbia residents who qualify by income can receive up to $13,000 from the Energy Savings Program. A pre-registration code, obtained before hiring a contractor, is required.
  • In Ontario, Home Renovation Savings asks for pre-approval first, then pays $1,250 for each ton, a heating capacity measure. Non-gas homes can receive at most $7,500.
  • Ground source units also qualify for up to $12,000 from Ontario, and the Energy Affordability Program installs free heat pumps worth up to $25,000.
  • In Nova Scotia, Efficiency Nova Scotia pairs a Moderate Income Rebate top-up with Home Energy Assessment rebates for up to $10,000.
  • Oil heat pump intake closed in Nova Scotia on July 2, 2026. HomeWarming, however, keeps installing single-zone units at no cost for lower-income homes.

Newfoundland Heat Pump Rebate and Prince Edward Island Rules

If you own a home in Newfoundland and Labrador and are moving off oil, the Oil to Electric Incentive Program is still open to you. Eligible transition costs are covered at up to 100%, with a maximum of $22,000. You need to use a participating installer, and that person receives the money directly. An extra federal payment of $250 goes to pre-approved households that meet the income test.

Through TakeCharge Greener Homes, residents on lower incomes can apply to get a heat pump at no cost. A single-person income of $37,375 or less is the cutoff. When the current round of funding is fully assigned, new applications will wait for the next funding release, which comes in April 2027.

In Prince Edward Island, the PEI free heat pump program and the provincial heat pump rebates are now closed, as of April 15, 2026. An Island homeowner who bought a heat pump during the window from April 15, 2025, to April 15, 2026 can still claim the rebate online.
