Claiming Your Iowa Heat Pump Rebates Step by Step

A joint program from MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy takes your discount directly off the purchase price. No paperwork needs to be mailed in for heating systems, but three steps must be followed:

  1. Before any contract is signed, the contractor you hire must be participating and must get your equipment through an approved wholesale distributor.
  2. Between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026, get the new unit bought, set up, and working while the funds last.
  3. A $225 heat pump water heater bought through MidAmerican Energy requires an online form filed within 90 days.

The water heater discount for Alliant Energy customers is applied right at the register instead. When a rural electric cooperative is your provider, the application comes after the work is done. Eastern Iowa Light and Power members apply online through SmartHub, and Iowa Lakes members mail in forms within six months.

When Will Iowa Home Energy Rebates Open for Income-Qualified Households?

Officials with the Iowa Economic Development Authority have requested federal funding, but the programs are not open yet. Start dates wait on approval from the federal Department of Energy, and the state does not expect to cover installations from the past.

After launch, the appliance program will help households whose income is below 150 percent of the local median. Up to 100 percent of costs could be covered for low-income families, while moderate-income families may receive up to 50 percent, with a cap of $14,000. For broader energy upgrades, a separate whole-home efficiency program intends to pay $2,000 to $8,000 per household. Sign up for the state email list now to find out when applications open.

Right now, the Iowa Weatherization Assistance Program gives free upgrades to households below 200 percent of the poverty level. To apply for weatherization along with heating bill aid, contact your local Community Action Agency.

Tax Credits, Rural Co-ops, and Heating Fuels in Iowa

Natural gas heats six in ten households across the state, and propane heats one in eight, nearly triple the national rate. An electric unit would run your heat on a grid that draws 63 percent of its power from wind.

Cold winters are why rural cooperatives pay more for a hybrid system, which is a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. Cooperative rebates go by the ton. The ton measures heating and cooling size and is listed on the equipment label. Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, for instance, will pay $650 per ton on gas-backup units once you sign a load agreement.

Your main savings now come from utility rebates, since the federal 25C tax credit no longer applies to equipment installed after December 31, 2025.

Common Questions About Iowa Heat Pump Rebates

Will any federal tax credits for heat pumps exist in 2026?

No, the residential energy tax credits were ended early by Congress under Public Law 119-21, which was signed on July 4, 2025. No credit goes to equipment put in service after December 31, 2025, according to Internal Revenue Service rules in Fact Sheet FS-2025-05. Only heating systems that were fully in place and running before the 2025 deadline qualify for that credit.

In Iowa, what energy rebates for ductless and water heating units are open right now?

Standard ductless mini-splits get $375 off at purchase from MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy, and cold-climate models get $525 off. If your geothermal unit has a desuperheater, they add $113 as well; this part takes extra heat from the system to warm your tap water. Eastern Iowa Light and Power, meanwhile, pays $650 for heat pump water heaters and adds $150 when you replace a gas unit.

Are rebates for heat pumps disappearing in Iowa?

Utility instant discounts last through December 31, 2026, are first come, first served, and cannot be combined with other offers. Iowa has sought roughly $60 million for appliance rebates, and more than $60 million for whole-home retrofits, to fund its future state programs. Up to $400,000 for multifamily buildings is included in whole-home funding, but all state launch dates remain uncertain while federal funding is reviewed.

In Iowa, how do equipment efficiency ratings affect my rebate amount?

Bigger utility discounts go to higher efficiency ratings. When the label's cooling efficiency score reads 15.2 SEER2, MidAmerican Energy and Alliant pay $300 for that unit. Your instant discount rises to $563 at 17.0 SEER2, or $713 for cold-climate models. Air-source rebates at Eastern Iowa Light and Power rise from $300 to $500 per ton with cold-climate certification.
