Efficiency Maine Heat Pump Rebate

The Efficiency Maine heat pump rebate pays from $3,000 to $9,000 toward a heat pump that heats your whole house, and the amount depends on your household income. Owners of single-wide mobile homes who meet the income rules can receive $13,900. A heat pump installer registered with Efficiency Maine has to do the work, and you or your installer then have six months to email or mail the claim form to Efficiency Maine.

Efficiency Maine Rebates by Income and System

Two things set your rebate: what your household earns and which kind of system goes in. If your household qualifies as low income, you get three times the standard rebate. If it qualifies as moderate income, you get twice the standard rebate.

There are two main kinds of rebate:

  • A ducted system pushes warm air through ducts to every room in the house. It pays one fixed amount per home.
  • Single-zone heat pumps pair one outdoor unit with one indoor unit. Each eligible outdoor unit earns a set amount, capped over the life of the home.

Say a moderate-income household puts in two single-zone outdoor units. That household would receive $2,000 for each of the two units. Once a home hits its cap, no more single-zone rebates come, since the totals count everything the home has ever gotten, not just one year's worth. Every figure here comes from the rebate page on Efficiency Maine's site.

A $500 Bonus for 2026

For a limited time, the any-income whole-home rebate carries a $500 bonus per home. The upgrade has to be done, and the claim emailed or postmarked, sometime from March 1 through December 31, 2026. Mobile home offers do not get the bonus.

Heat Pumps That Draw From the Ground

Choose a geothermal heat pump with the ENERGY STAR label, and Efficiency Maine pays back a third of what the project costs, capped at $3,000. Any income qualifies, and each home can claim it once. A vendor registered for geothermal work has to do the install.

Who Is Behind Efficiency Maine?

The state's home energy programs are run by the Efficiency Maine Trust, and you can claim its whole-home heat pump rebates right now. Get your power from CMP or Versant? This trust is the source of your heat pump rebate. Neither utility offers a heat pump rebate of its own, as far as we could find.

Who Can Get a Maine Heat Pump Rebate?

Your home can be a single-family house, a duplex, a condo, or a mixed-use building that holds one or two homes. No natural gas utility account can have existed for the home before the work. Heat pumps need to serve as your main heat all through the heating season. If you keep a furnace or boiler, it can only sit there for emergencies.

The bigger rebates come with income rules, and the home has to be where you live most of the time:

  • Low income: someone in the home gets help from MaineCare, HEAP, SNAP, or TANF benefits.
  • Moderate income: your adjusted gross income can run up to $70,000 for single filers, or $100,000 for joint filers. You'll find adjusted gross income near the bottom of page one on your federal tax return.

For the bigger rebates, Efficiency Maine wants your income verified before the work begins.

Sizing and Equipment Rules

Your peak heating load is how much heat the house demands on the year's coldest days. Your installer figures that number out for you.

  • A ducted system must cover the full peak heating load, and any furnace that blows hot air has to come out.
  • For single-zone units, the heat pumps alone must handle at least 80 percent of that peak load. Add your backup heat and the two together have to handle every bit of the load.

Any single-zone unit you install has to appear on the list of qualifying heat pumps at Efficiency Maine. The job also has to stick to the installation checklist the program provides. Multi-zone heat pumps, where one outdoor unit feeds several rooms, can count toward the heat you need but pay nothing. Dual-fuel systems do not qualify. A new home finished on or after January 1, 2027 cannot have any furnace or boiler at all.

Steps to Get the Rebate

  1. If a low- or moderate-income rebate is your goal, verify your income with Efficiency Maine before anything else.
  2. Bring in a Residential Registered Vendor for heat pumps, since other contractors' work will not count.
  3. Get the system in.
  4. Email or mail the rebate claim form within six months of finishing. Either you or your vendor can submit it.
  5. Efficiency Maine mails you a check. That takes around six weeks.

Single-Wide Mobile Homes

Owners of single-wide mobile homes who meet the income rules can receive $13,900 toward a ducted heat pump through the Mobile Home Initiative. The home must run on propane, oil, or kerosene and sit in a designated town. Your share of the cost is $1,000. Efficiency Maine has to sign off before installation begins, and any claim must be in by the end of 2026. Removing an old fuel tank earns another $400 from the Maine DEP.

Questions and Answers on Maine Heat Pump Rebates

Are heat pump rebates still available in Maine?

They are. Both the rebates for whole-home heat pumps and the offers on heat pump water heaters are live. Efficiency Maine also administers the federal Home Energy Rebates, which are only partly open. Right now those dollars reach only new affordable multifamily buildings and single-wide mobile homes, and Efficiency Maine is reviewing new federal notices dated June 1, 2026.

Do heat pumps come with tax credits in 2026?

No. A federal law signed on July 4, 2025 ended the tax credit for heat pumps installed after December 31, 2025, so the Efficiency Maine rebates are now the main help available. Fact sheet FS-2025-05 has the IRS explanation.

Is financing available if I need to spread out the cost?

Home energy loans from the Efficiency Maine Green Bank go up to $25,000. Terms run one, five, or ten years, with APRs of 0%, 5.99%, and 7.99% in that order. There's also an income-based option: up to $7,500 borrowed over ten years at 5.99%. Rates are subject to change.

How does the heat pump water heater discount work?

Through October 30, 2026, an instant $1,200 discount applies to any ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater, whatever the tank size. Participating sellers include Granite Group, Home Depot, Lowe's, Selco, and various plumbing distributors. For one example, on September 11, 2026, a 50-gallon unit at Home Depot ran $349 once the discount came off. Buy somewhere else instead? Mail in your receipt within six months of purchase and a $1,150 rebate comes back to you. A registered vendor is not needed for the install. Each address is limited to one such rebate or discount per calendar year.
