Claiming Maine Heat Pump Rebates Step by Step

A new system has to handle at least 80% of peak heating load, which means the warmth needed on the year's coldest day. Emergency backup is the only job left for an existing furnace or boiler. A home that had a natural gas account before does not qualify.

  1. If you want the larger low-income or moderate-income rebate, verify your income with Efficiency Maine before the installation.
  2. Have an Efficiency Maine Residential Registered Vendor do the install when your equipment qualifies as single-zone, ducted, or geothermal.
  3. The rebate form is due within six months of completion; Efficiency Maine then mails your check in six weeks.

Finish and claim a whole-home upgrade between March 1 and December 31, 2026, and you get an extra $500 bonus. A registered installer is not required for heat pump water heaters. Until October 30, 2026, stores that participate take $1,200 off at the register, or you can mail in a claim for $1,150.

Low and Moderate Incomes Get Higher Tiers

The standard rebate amount triples when any household member has MaineCare, SNAP food assistance, TANF, or HEAP. Your lifetime limit rises to $9,000 for ducted or single-zone systems at your primary home. Up to $6,000 is available to moderate-income homeowners who do a whole-home upgrade. Qualifying takes an adjusted gross income of up to $70,000 for singles or $100,000 for joint filers; this is your yearly income minus basic tax deductions.

Right now, the federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program in Maine is only partly open. New affordable multifamily housing gets funding, along with the Mobile Home Initiative, which serves single-wide homes that burn oil, propane, or kerosene. Mobile home owners who are pre-approved pay $1,000; the rest is covered by a $13,900 rebate through December 31, 2026. Home Efficiency Rebates, the companion federal program, remains under review for multifamily buildings and is closed to households.

Weatherization Help and Rules Specific to Maine

Over half of the homes people own in Maine date from 1960 or earlier, so sealing drafts is an important step before heating with electricity. Income-eligible families that apply for HEAP heating assistance can receive free air sealing from the MaineHousing Weatherization Assistance Program. Efficiency Maine also pays as much as $8,600 for insulation upgrades, so checking your attic helps too.

Heat pumps across the state now number over 200,000, more than oil systems in new homes. A $400 rebate to remove a fuel tank is also available from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for mobile home owners moving off oil. A Home Heating Eco Rate is offered by Versant Power, even though neither it nor Central Maine Power pays separate equipment rebates. You qualify if heat pumps account for at least 50% of your home electricity. For installs after December 31, 2025, the federal home energy tax credit ended. On tax forms it is called Section 25C.

Common Questions About Maine Heat Pump Rebates

In Maine, is a federal tax credit still available for heat pumps?

No. You cannot claim any federal tax credit for a system you install in 2026 or later. The residential energy credit ended early through Public Law 119-21, passed by Congress on July 4, 2025. Internal Revenue Service rules let only equipment that went into service on or before December 31, 2025 count on your federal tax return.

Are heat pump rebates still offered by Maine, and which homes qualify?

Yes. Homeowners at any income level receive $1,000 for each single-zone outdoor unit, capped at $3,000, or $3,000 for geothermal or ducted systems. Eligible homes include single-family homes, duplexes, and condominiums, plus mixed-use buildings that contain one or two housing units. Rebates are not given for dual-fuel or multi-zone systems, though heating capacity can include existing multi-zone units. From January 1, 2027, new construction cannot include a furnace or boiler and still qualify.

In Maine, how do I cover the remaining cost of a heat pump?

To cover your balance after rebates, Efficiency Maine Green Bank provides home energy loans up to $25,000. The loan terms are one year at 0% interest, five years at 5.99%, or a term of ten years at 7.99%. Borrowers who meet the income limit can borrow up to $7,500 over ten years at 5.99% interest. The instant discount is applied at checkout by Granite Group, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Selco when you buy a water heater.

In Maine, is it worth getting a heat pump?

In 2023, Maine hit its initial goal of 100,000 new installations two years ahead of schedule. The state's goal today is 175,000 more units by 2027, spread across its 570,000 homes. To get a whole-home rebate, your model must appear on Efficiency Maine's eligible list, and the install must follow an official requirements checklist. Claiming the ducted whole-home rebate means your old forced hot air furnace must come out completely.
