Heat Pump Cost After Rebates
Home size, any existing ductwork, and local utility incentives all shape your final heat pump cost after rebates.
The federal 25C credit ended for heat pumps installed after 31 December 2025, so this estimate counts utility and state rebates only.

Before you count a rebate, check the two rules most programs set: the installer has to be on the program's contractor list (some also want pre-approval before work starts), and the equipment has to meet its efficiency rule, usually an ENERGY STAR certified or cold-climate model. The efficiency rules page lists them program by program.

Typical Installed Heat Pump Cost by System
Based on national EnergySage 2026 quotes, all system types together average $15,393 before incentives. $14,529 is the average for ducted systems, and $14,353 for hybrid furnace setups. Multi-room ductless mini-splits use wall units and no ducts, and they average $25,393.
Prices change with home size, based on Rewiring America and its cost report of March 2024 from Massachusetts and California:
- For spaces of 1,000 square feet or less, a single-zone mini-split runs $5,400 to $8,500, with a median of $6,600.
- A whole-home system for homes of 1,500 to 2,500 square feet runs $17,000 to $23,000, and the median is $19,500.
- A heat pump water heater runs $3,500 to $5,000 when an electric tank is replaced, or $4,100 to $6,800 for a gas replacement.
- Nationally, geothermal ground-source systems run $15,000 to more than $40,000, and a January 2024 New York study put the average at $51,572.
Home Factors That Shift Your Final Price
Prices swing widely with location and home size, ranging from $8,000 in New Mexico to $33,000 in New York, according to EnergySage. In Rewiring America data, homes between 2,500 and 5,500 square feet hit a median of $25,000. The median climbs to $29,000 for houses larger than 5,500 square feet.
Tons measure capacity, and a single ton delivers 12,000 British Thermal Units, or BTU, of heat each hour. In EnergySage quotes from 2025, ductless setups with several indoor units averaged $4,944 per ton. Cold-climate units for freezing winters cost more too, as does bringing an older electrical panel up to 200 amps.
Heat Pump Cost After Rebates and Written Quotes
A rebate cuts your bill either as an upfront discount on the invoice from your contractor or as a check once installation is done. For households that meet income limits, state programs in California and Indiana subtract up to $8,000 at the point of sale. Through participating installers, utilities like Ameren Illinois also give a $900 instant discount.
Other offers are claimed after installation, such as Baltimore Gas and Electric paying up to $3,000 when you replace fossil fuel. Get three itemized written quotes from contractors approved by your utility before signing an installation agreement. With written quotes, you can see exact model numbers, tell instant discounts apart from mail-in rebates, and avoid paying for equipment that is too big.

Heat Pump Prices and Sizing: Common Questions
For a home of 1,500 to 1,800 square feet, what size heat pump do I need?
Bryant, Trane, and other manufacturers estimate that 36,000 BTU, or three tons, covers a home between 1,500 and 1,800 square feet. Both manufacturers caution you not to depend on square footage alone when you make your final choice. Rewiring America found the common rule of 30 BTU per square foot left Massachusetts systems oversized by an average of 31,000 BTU.
How will a contractor figure out the right size heat pump for my house?
Have your installer test for air leaks with a blower door test and do a Manual J load calculation. Building codes require Manual J, the national standard, to measure the exact heating and cooling your home needs. Department of Energy guides say that if you size only for summer cooling, your winter heating ends up undersized in cooler regions.
For a 2,000 square foot home, how much does a heat pump cost once utility rebates are applied?
Heating capacity of three to four tons is typical for a home measuring 2,000 square feet. Rebates from many electric utilities are paid by the ton, and that takes thousands off your upfront bill. Xcel Energy pays $1,500 per heating ton in Colorado, and Energize Connecticut offers $1,500 per ton, capped at $10,000. In California, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power pays as much as $2,500 per ton.
Get installer quotes that include your rebates
Most rebates on this page are paid through the installer or need the installer's paperwork, so the quote is where the money is settled. Tell us the ZIP code and what you want installed, and installers who work with these programs send a written price with the rebates taken off.
